THE STORY OF MAHDEEN. Since 1907...
San Francisco was rebuilding from an earthquake,
crews had started to dig the Panama Canal, and an east Texas barber,
in the town of Nacogdoches, had decided to augment his income by
creating a new hair tonic.
J.L. Needham developed the formula, bottled it
himself and sold it to local drugstores under the name of "MAHDEEN",
which was his own name spelled backwards.
His photographer friend Charles Casley, designed
the label, Mahdeen Shampoo was added to the line, he teamed up with
super salesman Frank S. Aikman and by the time of Needham's death
in 1918, Mahdeen Hair Tonic had gained national prominence.
Aikman, and subsequent partners, carried on the
Mahdeen business, gaining acceptance in the then growing "beauty
parlour" industry, but still with only the original two products.
This was to change dramatically as Mahdeen strived to create a better
shampoo.
In 1964, MAHDEEN was acquired by Owen Laboratories
of Dallas, Texas, a pharmaceutical company specializing in dermatological
products for hair, scalp and skin.
MAHDEEN contined their path of "salon only" distribution,
and their first MEDICEUTICAL product launched under the Owen ownership
was virtually an instant success. MEDI-DAN Dandruff Treatment Shampoo
became the industry leader in its category, and continues to be
regarded as the authoritative salon dandruff shampoo. In 1972, Owen
Laboratories was acquired by Alcon Laboratories, the world's largest
manufacturer of pharmaceutical ophthalmic preparations. Alcon's
Science and Technology Department greatly enhanced Mahdeen's research
and development of new products, and many more MEDICEUTICALS were
added to the line.
Today MAHDEEN MEDICEUTICALS, INC. operates independently,
manufactures all it's products in Canada, and relies on talented
Canadians for product development and to create our marketing support,
literature, and packaging design.
Our commitment to our heritage continues.
Our dedication to creating effective, Mediceutically-active
salon products of superb quality prevails.
And we are proud to be Canadian!
